Live from San Diego, this is the Fox 5 morning news at 7. Today is Super Tuesday. Voters in 15 states, including California, are all heading to the polls. It's a big day here with more on what we can expect.
Fox Eye political analyst, Charles Chamberlin.
Charles, good morning. Good morning. Super Tuesday is finally here. What makes this day specifically so important?
Well, the biggest day in terms of primaries, a third of all the delegates are up for grabs. For Republicans, some 865 delegates are up for grabs. And it's very long. There are a lot of names on there. We'll talk about some of these races right now, but first, I wanna talk about Nikki Haley.
She says she's not dropping out of this, and she's gonna stay in it as long as she feels that she is competitive. Mhmm. Does she still have a path to stay in this race even though the polls are showing that Trump is leading?
No. No. Look, she has 43 delegates right now to Donald Trump's 247. She doesn't have a shot.
And part of it is because of the way the Republican primaries are set up. It's winner-take-all. That 40% that she's been getting – it's not gonna cut it. You gotta get over 50%, and you have to take all of them. She is gonna be buried in the avalanche of delegates after Tuesday.
Yeah. But why would I stay in it then if you're gonna be buried in the mail?
The money. I mean, there are folks out there that want to see competition for Donald Trump, and it makes political sense. When you look at former president Donald Trump's age, when you look at the 91 indictments, when you look at all that chaos that's surrounding him, there's a chance that, you know what, maybe he might not make it to November.
So, it makes a lot of political sense for her to stay in the race. But in terms of a future with him in the race, not a chance. And there's also 2028, which is around the corner for her, so she needs to keep her name out there for sure, even though there's no chance this year unless something in the courts happens.
What are we gonna see from Biden and Trump headed into the general election? I don't think with these two particular candidates, kind of a replay, if you will, of 2020. The next 7 or 8 months are gonna be messy. Pretty interesting. Messy is one way of putting it.
Messy. I'm seeing, right now, a lot of political positioning. You're seeing Biden try to move forward on some issues like immigration. He's got this issue with Hamas and with the folks in the Middle East. He's gotta take care of that.
You're seeing issues, especially with the Palestinians that are there. He's now saying that there needs to be - there's a bit of outface. He's talking about, hey, now we need to see a ceasefire. With Trump, he's just gotta stay on the aggressive.
He's just gotta say, look. I'm the victim. He's gotta say, look, when I was president, everyone, the economy was better.
Things were better. He's just gotta stay on attack. But I think what Biden's been doing, instead of playing defense, going on the offense, is probably the path forward. So you're gonna see a lot of political positioning going forward over the next couple of months. Have you ever seen a presidential election where, at this point on Super Tuesday, you're looking ahead to election day in November, and both candidates potentially are thinking about, well, if he doesn't make it to that election day, this person would take over?
And on the other side, the same thing. If Trump and the case of whatever, then that person can take over. If Biden is too old and something happens and he can't, no. I don't remember anything of the sort in years past. We got the oldest candidates in history.
Right. These guys are gonna be over 80 years old if they were to fulfill a term. I don't think this is completely unprecedented, and it's playing into a role. Look. There's a major issue with this right now.
I think voter turnout is extremely low because a lot of people are not interested in voting right now. California is expecting record voter low turnout. Isn't that not shocking to you? No. It's not.
How everybody's so opinionated, everybody's so divided, and the one avenue that we all have that's not social media is to go vote. Hi, man. Explain the low turnout. Everybody spews their opinion – the choices. People clearly don't wanna make the choice between these two, sure.
Elderly candidates. They wanna see something else. And right now, California is on record – is on track to have its voter turnout in history. As of Sunday, re's 22,000,000 ballots went out. As of Sunday, 3,000,000 were turned in.
Let's talk about California. Let's talk about one of our senate seats is up for grabs. So what do you what do you think is gonna happen there? With the senate seat, look, this seat was a result of Dianne Feinstein stepping down. The person whose race is to lose is Adam Schiff.
He's at about 20 – the last aggregate polling I was looking at, he was about 25.5%. The next highest was the former Dodger or Padres, whichever team you'd rather go with, first baseman Steve Garvey. But a lot of people are upset about this because people are upset about something else. It is because Adam Schiff ran some attack ads that basically love-bombed him.
They said how great of a Republican he is, how conservative he is. And while that does kind of, you know, attack him from a Democratic standpoint, it consolidates the Republican vote around him. So now he's trending much higher in the polls. Second, in some cases. So you think there are just other Democrats in the race scrambling? That gave Steve Garvey more notoriety.
That's what Katie Porter's people are saying. It's like, listen. What? Just keep his name out of all of your ads and use my name and then go at but maybe they didn't wanna do that. But get this.
This happens all the time. I've done it in some of the races that I've been involved in. This whole, you know, top 2 thing Right. It works sometimes, and, you know, there are things you can do to make it not work. So right now, it's not exactly working because the most competitive race would probably involve Katie Porter, who's a protege of Elizabeth Warner Warren Warren.
And a master fundraiser. Wow. Okay. Do you think Garvey has a chance if he advances? No.
No? No. I love how you're so confident about some of these against Earth. You're like, not a chance. No.
And here's the here's the funny thing. There's a lot of Democrats out. Steam, though. However, DC would get a sniff of California Republican senator.
They put wouldn't dump every ounce, every penny they have in. Yeah, but he is not pulling there. He had some lackluster performances and debate, as well as his fundraising. It just isn't there, and, look – Democrats are kind of at this weird point.
They're like, well, we may kinda like Schiff. We kinda like Porter, but, you know, we're not gonna see Porter, so it's not gonna be competitive. Maybe the best thing that comes out of this is our money goes elsewhere to help other candidates get elected. So it's a weird race. I wanted to ask you about other races, but I think more importantly, with this being Super Tuesday and hearing what you're saying about the low voter turnout, I mean, it's still not too late.
You have until the entire day today. Even as much as we talk about and how much this affects people's lives in the long run, yeah. You know, go out and vote. Yeah, I wish I could, like, look in the camera and tell people, look, there are other races out there. Down ballot, we've got people running for Congress.
We've got people running for city council. We've got people running for the Senate. School boards. It's school everything. It is not just about the presidents.
If you wanna make a change and you don't think that you can make a change by voting for one president or another candidate, you have the opportunity to make a huge policy change and get people that reflect your values by voting down ballot. Turn your turn your your ballot, please. Where's your name on this ballot? I'm just taking notes on it. Charles Chamberlain.
Charles. Check. Check. I have a feeling Charles can get me elected to something. What would I run?
You should. You should. Stop. Stop. I can see.
Nobody can handle this. Believe me. We handle every morning. We'll we love it. Political science major, too.
Yeah. Oh, yeah. For one semester. I didn't see it.
Oh, you didn't? I finished. Did you? Yeah. Oh, Charles.
Alright. Thank you. Thank you. Anytime. Seriously, that guy can get anybody.
Where should I listen?
